Alaska Here We Come!

YiB-01The “Year in Beer” kicks off with our first ever visit to the 49th state… Alaska.

We heard that Anchorage was a great beer town and the beer festival a blast, but the real motivation of choosing a somewhat unconventional January location was to show everyone how serious we are about the “Year in Beer” (YiB). Basically, “If they are crazy enough to go to Alaska in January they just might be crazy enough to pull the whole year off.” However, I will admit that I did look to see if Hawaii had a beer festival in January… I couldn’t find one.

Are we prepared for the cold? Merideth has a nice new long coat, but for the most part I refused to buy a bunch of winter clothes that I will only wear for a few days. Obviously, I am not going to be wearing my normal shorts and a T-shirt but neither will I be wearing 8 layers of clothing. We are not spending much time outside so why do I need arctic clothing? In the end, it might not even be that cold, which I hear also presents a problem… Anchorage turns into a slushy mess.

I will say that traveling to such a remote place has me somewhat confused. Several times, I have mentally reminded myself to put my passport into my pile of travel stuff and then remember that Alaska is part of the United States.

OK… here is the really embarrassing ‘I know very little about Alaska’ moment… embarrassing mainly because I am really good at geography. For some strange reason, I thought ANCHORage was inland.

Ignorance aside, let’s get back to the reason for our trip: BEER.

The focus of the trip is the Great Alaska Beer & Barleywine Festival, which is on Friday and Saturday. Fifty breweries are going be pouring almost 200 different beers and meads. The festival is orchestrated by the Great Northern Brewers Club, Anchorage’s “biggest, best, and only homebrew club.”

Our strategy is not complicated… No matter how tempting, we will try not to drink beers from the lower 48. We didn’t travel to Alaska to drink Sierra Nevada, Full Sail, Rogue, Anchor and the rest. Beers that we don’t have easy access to at home will be tempting… maybe after we go through all the Alaskan beers, we can move on to them.

Secondly, we will most likely (Merideth most certainly) shy away from the Barleywines and other high alcohol beers so to focus on trying a wider range of Alaskan beer. Besides Alaskan Brewing’s smoked porter, we don’t see too much Alaskan beer in this part of the lower 48. So, this is our chance to really experience what Alaska has to offer.

A new adventure in our trip is that we are volunteering at the festival. I thought it would be a good way to meet people. Unfortunately, we are unable to pour beer (you need to go through a class to be able to pour), so we are going to help straighten up between the two Saturday sessions. If it goes well, we will make volunteering a regular occurrence this year.

Then there is always the quest to find all the beer industry pre- and post-parties. This is where you find all the good stuff.

Outside of the festival, there are 4 breweries in Anchorage to visit, as well as a handful of beer bars that are ‘must stops’. We have made some local connections to help us with our quest because in the end, it is all about the brewery list. And luckily, we will be meeting up with some fellow beer travelers who are more familiar with Anchorage, so we shouldn’t get lost.

Less than a week to go and the excitement is building! The YiB is finally here and Alaska… here we come!

New Video, Harvest Ale and Upcoming Pint Opportunites

Our latest episode of “One Pint at a Time” is available for your viewing pleasure. Learn why the Oregon Brewers Festival is considered one of the best craft beer festivals in the world in the episode called 2007 Oregon Brewers Festival.

We are excited about this episode because we were able to use the lessons learned from our European trip when we were very much novices to shooting video. Namely, you can never have too much footage plus it is always nice to see us in the video. We are continually learning how to improve our videos and I hope you can see the difference.

As for the Sierra Nevada Harvest/Fresh Hop Ale, everyone can rest easier. I finally found some and have been enjoying it almost on a nightly basis this week. I really enjoy the oily, resiny bitterness from the wet hops.

Finally, for those who want to have a pint (or litre) with us, here are your upcoming opportunitues:
October 27: Oktoberfest at the Ol’ Factory Cafe in Sand City. This will be your last opportunity in 2007 to see Merideth in her dirndle and that, in itself, is worth the price of admission.
October 31: Halloween in Santa Cruz… We are going to be at the Catalyst for a Street Dogs show but beforehand, you will probably find us at the Poet and Patriot.
November 3rd: We will be in the Bay Area for the Cal game but prior to the game, we will be found first at City Beer (12:30/1pm-ish) and then at Barclays (3pm-ish) . Our friend Chris from Seattle (the Beer Retard) should be meeting us at Barclays.

For those who haven’t tried the Sierra Nevada Harvest/Fresh Hop Ale, I have a backup supply awaiting me at City Beer. I like to share…

Oh, and we’ll probably be hanging out at the Ol’ Factory Cafe tonight…

New Friends

So we had a great time at OBF!  We are a little new to the “media” side of things, but we did our best to be outgoing and as a result, we met some really cool people that could really talk beer! Plus, after a few pints, even the most shy of us can mingle with the best of them. It was nice to talk with like-minded (and some not-so-like-minded) people who are as much into beer as we are. I don’t know about you, but in our circle of friends, we are seen as being pretty obsessed with all things beer and sometimes made to feel like our obsession is way out there.  Well, when you are in a whole group of beergeeks, a girl can begin to feel pretty darn normal and really feel part of the big beer world out there. Ya know, I don’t profess to be an expert on beer or even be able to talk technical beer speak, but I’d like to think I can hold my own in a beer conversation.  I just hope that I didn’t make a total dork of myself!  If I did, please don’t tell me.  I’d like to keep thinking that I did okay! Besides, I’m just a little beergeek girl who appreciates good beer and good beer conversation. So here’s to my new friends and I look forward to more beer parties to come. . .assuming we will get invited to some . . .

Portland and OBF

We are finishing up our 2 day stay in Portland and about to head out to the Oregon coast. I have to say Portland has changed a lot since our last visit in 1999 but it is still a great beer-filled city.

After the excellent brewers guild dinner on Wednesday night, we did our traditional walk up to the Bridgeport Brewery in the Pearl District. The redevelopment of the neighborhood was amazing… old warehouses being replaced by brand new condo complexes. Whether that is progress or not, I am not sure but one thing is for sure; it was the Bridgeport Brewery that started the revitalization of the neighborhood. It was also nice seeing our old friends Roscoe and Fidel… and Eve too.

Our day at the OBF started early… 10am at the Rogue pub in the Pearl District for breakfast, beer and kazoo practice. Then the parade of revelers started down to the festival lead by the mayor of Portland, bagpipers and a keg of Rogue ale. And just like in Munich, the mayor tapped the keg to officially open the festival. My hats off to the Rogue crew and the brewers guild for pulling off a great event.

The festival continues to bring in some of the best beer in the Northwest and we tried too many great brews (and a few stinkers) to list here. We also met some great people who, like us, are trying to make the world more enjoyable through beer.

We finished off a long beer filled day by visiting the world famous Horse Brass Pub… Don Younger has been pouring great beer in his pub for over 30 years and I am ashamed to have to admit it was our first time there. We definitely missed out on our previous trips to Portland. What an incredible pub.

All the pictures can of Portland can be seen here.
